Restaurant groups oppose calorie counts on menus

New York City chain restaurants that don’t provide calorie counts on menus could face fines up to $2,000 due to a regulation that took effect April 30. Representing its 3,000 restaurant owners, the New York State Restaurant Association has vowed to appeal the latest court decision. A U.S. District Court’s decision, made April 16, denied a stay of the regulation’s implementation. The city’s Department of Health is now issuing violations. Fines start July 18 and will range from $200 to $2,000.
